When our oldest boy was four, he invented the word "forleft," which he had only in the preterite. He was apparently trying to distinguish between "forgot" in the sense of leaving something behind and "forgot" in the sense of not remembering to do something. I've always thought it a useful neologism--even if he outgrew it in a few months.

Scott,
Surely you mean for-gotten! );-)

Of course, if you've forgotten to go to the circus just once, I suppose you must've gone at least twice.

Sorry, but I couldn't resist,

Paul

"If this were play'd upon a stage now, I could condemn it as an improbable fiction" (_Twelfth Night_ 3.4.127-128).

One self-proclaimed expert in English grammar once sneered at me,
"There is never any justification for using 'gotten'; no semantic difference
exists between 'got' and 'gotten."

My response was "I've gotten to go to the circus just once; oh, well,
I've got to go; see you later."
