Ah, Herb,
Yes, the skunk image is vivid indeed (Brock's brainchild, I believe).
While I may wish that the aspect had been perfective -- "Grammar has
been the skunk," thereby signalling that we're beyond that now, -- the
rest of the book is indeed very alive with and for grammar.
