Regarding "a scissor" versus "scissors," I was born and
raised near Astoria, NY, and I grew up referencing "a
scissor."  Regional differences are so intriguing!

P.S.  As I was getting ready to send this, my spell checker
came back flagging "scissor" as misspelled and suggesting
"scissors" instead.  Again, intriguing!
