My own mnemonic for 'its' vs. 'it's' comes from Clinton's first
campaign: Remember the slogan "It's the economy, stupid"? I tell myself
"It's a contraction, stupid!" and it works every time.
My students, unfortunately, weren't conscious in 1992, and aren't
especially attuned to politics today, so I fear it is of limited
usefulness now. I use it anyway.
I have several 'silly tips' on my Editing Tips web page. I fear I will
get some flack for some things that are on there; on the other hand,
maybe someone will have useful corrections. The URL is
