I am joining the chorus of those who affirm what a wonderful listserve
this is. When I have time to read the posts, I always find the most
stimulating discussions going on. My ATEG e-mail folder is chock full of
discussions that I have saved with the intention of revisiting because the
content is so relevant to what I do. Thank you, everyone, for your
contributions; I hope your enthusiasm for grammar and linguistics will not
fade.

An earlier respondent in this thread pointed out that ATEG is a special
interest group within the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE).
Some of you may be interested in reviewing what the NCTE has set as
standards for the preparation of secondary school English teachers. I
include these standards in the syllabus for my introduction to linguistics
course:  English teacher candidates should

3.1.1  understand language acquisition and development;
3.1.2 demonstrate how reading, writing, speaking, listening,
viewing, and thinking are interrelated;
3.1.3 understand the impact of cultural, economic, political, and social
environments upon language;
3.1.4 understand and respect diversity in language use, patterns, and
dialects across cultures, ethnic groups, geographic regions, and social
roles;
3.1.5 understand the evolution of the English language and the
historical influences on its various forms;
3.1.6  understand English grammars;
3.1.7  understand semantics, syntax, morphology, and phonology;
3.1.8 understand the various purposes for which language is used.

I am supposing that there is no other interest group within NCTE besides
ATEG that is better equipped and positioned to help the English-teaching
profession to address these important objectives.
