Although you probably can't use it as an actual text, I found that The
Teaching Company's lecture series "The History of the English Language"
is an excellent jumping off point, if only for your own edification. It
consists of a series of recorded lectures by Seth Lerer of Stanford,
and it may give you some excellent ideas. It's available at

Subject: Re: Grammar course for college sophomores
Dear colleagues,
I'm part of a committee which is charged with
developing an intermediate-level grammar course which would also
include a brief treatment of the history of the English language. We
would appreciate your suggestions as to scope of the course and
appropriate texts. Our students will have completed the 2-semester
freshman composition course which includes formal instruction in
grammar as part of writing essays and a research paper. This particular
sophomore-level course is designed for two categories of students:
those taking the English option for an associate's degree and those
taking the English education option.
Thanks for your help.
