I've been on both kinds of lists--moderated (screened) and not. Both
have their shortcomings. I'm all for using any automated screening to
catch some terms that 99.9% of the time are associated only with spam.
But I don't know such screening feasible. Most people seem to accept
spam without resigning from a list.

I do not believe it's necessary for a single person to do the
screening, especially if the screening deals with 'off topic'
discussions. It interesting that the person who sent the political
message later noted that it was just a mistake of sending to the wrong
list, but at least one person came to her defense as saying the message
was relevant. Grammar can be surprisingly political at times, and even
the most conscientious screener is going to have a tough time deciding
when someone is crossing the line.

In short, I see no reason at this point to change anything in the way
we post.

I, for one, would hate to see the list pass through a moderator before
messages are released. Not only would there be duplicate responses, as
a previous posting mentioned, but we would also lose the spontenaity
provided by the sometimes rapid-fire exchanges of information. As an
example, the last question I posted was answered almost immediately by
Herb Stahlke (God love him!), allowing me to resolve the issue while it
was hot and move on.

This listserv is an invaluable source of ideas and information. If I
have to occasionally exercise my delete key on a group of unread
postings (Ctrl + left click to highlight multiple items), then so be it.
It seems like a pretty good trade-off to me.
