I don't think Dave meant that ALL ellipsis comes from be-deletion, only
ellipsis in adverbial (subordinate) clauses.  In compound sentences, such
the one you instance, there can be deletion of almost any verb:  Lee came
from the aristocracy; Grant from the working class.  One fought for the
South; the other for the North.
