Bill,
    I have spent most of my adult life teaching subjects that are often
high up on the list of items students groan about (or have been led to
believe they should groan about): Latin, remedial spelling,
developmental writing, and basic syntax.  Years ago the real pleasures
came from introducing good students to Latin; now they come from
introducing some of the best students here to sentence analysis.  I have
found the two experiences very similar.  Terminology constitutes a
foreign language without knowledge of which, the students cannot join
the conversation.
