I'm not aware of any research. But there should be plenty. As early as in
the sixties I learned that it was useless to teach grammar before about 13,
i.e. before the onset of puberty. Funnily enough, the person who taught this
to his teacher trainees had publishede a series of grammar books which
started teaching grammar at 10 ...
