But if you transform the active voice in "Pioneer women often bore many
children" into passive voice using a "by" phrase, you would say "Many
children were borne by pioneer women."

So maybe "born" IS the verb I was thinking of that is used only in
passive voice. But I have a nagging idea it was something else!

Anyway, this whole thread has been worth it to me just to get Marshall
Myers' insght that "resemble" is NEVER used in passive voice! Something
else to ask students about and then forget the answer to!

Correction to my guess. I'm curious to hear the answer.

Liz,

"Born" is used in past tense: "Pioneer women often bore many children."
A bit archaic, but still used.

This probably won't post to the list (account problems), so post it for
me if you like.
