Does anyone know who first used these two terms to describe clauses? I'm considering proposing a conference paper something like "Independent and Dependent Clauses ¯ What Nut Came up with this Idea?" ¯ If anyone wants to send me a defense of the terms, I'll be happy to consider it for inclusion in the paper (assuming that I propose it, etc.).
Thanks,
Ed
