I love traditional grammar now, but I didn't love it as a child because it
was always presented as "hard" or "boring." If we gave a child a plate
of cookies for the first time and sent similar messages, the plate would
probably remain full.
I came to enjoy grammar because I had a group of high school freshman who
helped me turn it into a game or a puzzle or a mystery to be solved. When
my lectures turned to that attitude, it was no longer a struggle for them
or for me. In fact, it is fun.
I don't get many opportunities to teach grammar now, sadly, but I do try
to impress on my Learning Center tutors that same philosophy.
I do realize that I am "preaching to the choir."--Lori Pahde, MacMurray
