I've begun to wonder whether ATEG has begun to morph into ASP--the
American Society of Peevologists. I found Nunberg's piece to be trite:
encouraging people to develop peeves as a form of entertainment. My
advice to anyone who feels the urge to "nurture a few more peeves" is to
keep them to yourself. We don't need to give students more complexes that
further alienate them from English classes. And we don't need to sow more
seeds for what might become "zombie rules" (cf. Nunberg's reference to
Zwicky). There many more harmless and healthy ways to entertain ourselves
than nurturing linguistic peeves.
