Jan,
For my English classes at a community college, I use article by Wheeler and
Swords published in
Language Arts. Volume 81, Number 6, July 2004.
(c) by the National Council of Teachers of English
The title is Codeswitching: Tools of language and culture transform the
dialectally diverse classroom
My students love it. I feel that most of them have been waiting most of
their lives to hear the message in this paper. I think this kind of
information would be very useful in an elective course on language issues.
I'm tutoring a college Freshman who attends Winston Salem State University
when he comes home for weekends. He was so excited to read this article. He
immediately starting using the terms "code switching" and "bidialectical."
He even invented his own term, "bi-coding" by mistake when he was discussing
the article with me. I told him I liked it.
