Hello everyone.

You may think it is a trivial question, but I want to know the answer
just for my own future reference.

In the following sentence, some words are omitted after "whether".

In Japanese religions, whether Shinto or Buddhism, fire plays an
important role.

Are they "it is" or "they are"?

Thank in advance.
