A grad student who plans to teach college composition but also wants to study linguistics has asked me for suggested reference books for grammarians or aspiring linguists--not grammar handbooks or scholarship per se, but solid books on language, especially the English language.

I have my picks, but I'm interested in what other people on the list consider the best reference texts now available.

I know this is a broad quesiton and it depends on each person's individual interests, needs, etc etc etc. But I think it would be good to see what other people recommend. (The literature folks always have these interesting debates on the 'best' novels. Why can't we play too!)
