We often say "Missippi" but we write "Mississippi." Offlt enough I have
never seen Mississippi misspelled by a native. I was a linguist in
Mississippi for two years in the 90s but never met anyone else.
Of course I was not working at or attending a university or college either
and we normally do not go around with "Linguist" on our license plates.

Well, "linguist have" is a periphrastic dual for just such situations.
