Carolyn,
The session at Nashville I vaguely alluded to was a roundtable
called 'This is not your father's grammar class' on Fri from
2:45 - 4:00 (session I.5).

At the 1995 CCCC, there was another excellent session: a panel
entitled 'Linguistics & composition: where the twain do meet'
(session I 24). It to deal w/ the role of grammar & linguistics
in teaching English, esp. composition.
