Martha,

Thank you and to the others who have explained the difference in
appositives. I understood the restrictive/non restrictive rule as it applies
to adjective clauses, so this makes sense to me. I'm sure I've seen
appositives without commas, but really noticed or perhaps didn't identify
them as appositives for the very reasoning in the rule.

I can just hear my students groan when I correct what I told them about
commas for all appositives. I'm always doing this to them. Oh by the way, I
got something wrong...or there's a couple of exceptions to the rule we just
learned.
