Marty,
Thanks for healthy dose of reality. This is why I'd like to see principles for terminology rather than any list of terms, which I don't think anyone would find fully acceptable. Certainly what is currently taught must be given respect, even if we might try to change some of it. Teachers still have to follow existing curricula.

ATEGers,
I wish that I were able to attend this conference. I have been reading
the listserve for a few years, and I have a great deal of respect for
those of you who actively participate in discussion on this list. I was
fortunate to attend an all day workshop on grammar at a recent NCTE
convention that included some of the people most active on this list.
With regard to the list, I have noticed an evolution of sorts-- from
esoteric discussions of the finer points of language and usage (which I
do enjoy!) to a more inclusive conversation that invites those of us who
are working with middle and high school students. I also appreciate your
willingness to provide assistance to classroom teachers (novice and
veteran) in approaches to infusing our curriculum with grammar and usage
instruction beyond just naming parts of speech.
As far as terminology goes, please keep in mind the varying degree of
exposure to teaching grammar of classroom teachers. Know that many
teachers rely heavily on the text provided to them by the district (or
even state). Some districts, like my own, expect teachers to teach
specific grammatical terms, identification, and to some extent their
application in real writing. Our students are tested after each six
weeks of the quarter to ensure that instruction has occurred and
learning is in process.
I look forward to seeing what ATEG's Scope and Sequence looks like, and
its ease in interfacing with current district scope and sequence. I wish
you well in your much needed endeavor.
Sincerely,
Ms. Marty Sierra-Perry
