I taught composition (four sections) using the Christensen text as the only
course book at the Univ of North Dakota in the late 70's when that was the only
text for first semester comp and D'Angelo was used for the second. (Bonniejean
Christensen taught at UND then as well.) Generative Rhetoric is partly
incorporated in the texts I use now to teach grammar methods under the
name "sentence expansion." Essays in Weaver's books, Schuster in his new book,
and others make reference to Christensen's sentence rhetoric - though not
usually by that name.

It was never included in any of my grad courses except the Teaching Comp course
at UND with my MA.

I teach a course now whose description looks like it was written by a committee
listing every possible thing the dept would like fixed in student writing.
When I used Kolln's *Rhetorical Grammar,* we stayed with final free modifiers
quite some time - in fact, I had to put verbals, absolutes, and appositives
together. SHe has them separated somehow - I forget how at the moment. But
after Christensen, I don't know how to teach them except together. I brought
in levels of modification and direction of modification too.

I just last fall supervised an independent study where a grad student used
Christensen rhetoric to analyze the styles of Newberry winners (non-poetry), 2
for each decade since 1930. He got a used copy from amazon. I'll bet
halfprice.com and ebay also have copies.

I would love to see a developed curriculum despite my suspicions that it would
be very difficult to find a place to initiate a whole curriculum. I will not
be in Seattle nor at CCCC. I hope some technophiles will log on and provide
commentary on what's happening.
