The author should probably have used the future perfect tense in the last sentence, "After Saturday, he will have swum . . . ." The future perfect utilizes a time reference in the future (after Sat.) and indicates that the action (swimming) started prior to that time and will be completed or perfected by that time.

Best,
Clint

Subject: Forests and trees

From an article in this morning's paper, by Barry Svrluga, Washington Post Staff Writer.

"[The] quality of seeing the trees rather than the forest has allowed Phelps to move through his program this week as John Henry moved through the mountains, an assembly line worker monotonously dealing only with what's directly before him. After Saturday, he has swum 16 times, somehow managing not to have one detract from another."

Is this O.K.?

(Who says I only recognize one verb form?:)
