We're getting more discussion on this than we do on some grammar points!!
I'm glad Ms. Wolf apologized for her mailing. I don't think the list
should be apolitical, but I do think political messages should address
grammar teaching directly (for instance, whether No Child Left Behind is
good for our cause or not).
As to spam, I get tons of it. My univ. is very bad at screening it out.
Virtually all spam messages now come with a spam prefix, but of course
the university has designed special instructions to the computer for
deciding which messages get one. About 10% of what they label spam is in
fact not spam. It seems to me this list doesn't get nearly as much spam
as I do on my individual account. I haven't found it particularly
burdensome to delete ATEG spam messages. It's much worse dealing with
the 50 or so spam messages I get daily on my univ. account!
