Frankly, I don't know that anything that is out there is going to excite
the unexcited. They all present the same facts, and have exercises. (I
am working on a book which tries to be less dull ... but I don't think
it will really do much better than the others). I suggest you send away
for exam copies and have a look. My book isn't finished, but it is in a
somewhat usable form. And it has a lot of exercise ideas. If you'd like
a copy, send me a check for $15 and a good snail-mail address.
Happy searching! And, of course, let us all know if you find something
that's dynamite.
Might I suggest as a supplement Ronald Wardhaugh's 'Proper English:
Myths and Misunderstanding about Language'? about 175 pages, and should
provide some social context and perhaps even discussion material.
