Hey, all. I'm new to the listserv. I joined it of necessity: our high
school is requiring 11th graders to take one semester of grammar. This
is the first time that grammar as a course has been taught at the
school in anyone's memory. I've been incorporating grammar into my
writing courses (Hillocks 1984, 1986; Graham & Perin 2007) for years
and into my literature courses as well (where is the research on
this???). But now I'm required to teach grammar as a course in and of
itself to 11th graders. There are no curriculum mandates and no
required texts. There is but one directive: teach to the ACT college
entrance exam.

Having reviewed the "grammar" section of practice ACT test from The
REAL ACT Prep Guide, I have observed that, according to my operative
vocabulary, it is a test of usage, mechanics, and style by means of
editing.

Based on prior experience, I know that I must teach the skills in the
context of reading literature and writing standard American English.
Do any of you have further suggestions on how to approach teaching
this course meaningfully and without boring my students to death?

Kevin
