Years ago I taught 9th grade and did something we called The Word
Project.
It was a long-term project with about ten sections requiring all sorts
of skills. Each student picked a word (nouns worked best), researched
its etymology in the OED, found it in a poem (which they explicated),
wrote an original piece, and created a visual representation, among
other things. The other parts I would have to look up once I get home--
if you are interested.
Kids really enjoyed this. We would have a display of the visuals and
their folders of written materials at the end of the term. Years later
students would return and talk with enthusiasm of their particular
words.
