I agree that the pornographic SPAM is highly objectionable, but I think that leaving the list is not the best way to handle the problem. Our email addresses get harvested in a variety of ways, and people are selling to spammers CD-ROMS containing 250,000,000 addresses. Spammers look at 8-10 purchases a day as a very successful response, so it's a cost-effective system for them.

I have Cloudmark Spamnet on my office PC and at home I use AT&T, which filters spam very well. Microsoft is also coming out next month with a server based anti-spam software that, if you run from an

Exchange server, will allow you to trap spam at the server so that it doesn't show up at your machine. There are other ways around this.

Dear fellow porn hating ATEG members,

I , too, am disgusted with pornographic SPAM (indeed, I hate ALL SPAM!). While I don't think that frustration over SPAM is a very good reason to leave the dialog on grammar instruction, I understand that many of you are feeling the same as Theresa and others. I hope that you reconsider your wish to leave and find ways to avoid the SPAM (my DSL server -- yahoo -- has a decent method for dealing with SPAM; not perfect, but decent enough that it is a minor nuisance only; other servers have other methods that vary in quality). If you still insist on leaving us, however, then you need to follow the proper procedure.

In order to get off the list, you must send a message to the correct address (messages to "ATEG@, etc.," only get posted to the list). Specific instructions are sent to all members when they sign on. Here is the instruction for leaving the list:

"You may leave the list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF ATEG" command to

	[log in to unmask]"

I'm sorry to see you leave the discussion.

	Sincerely,

	Paul E. Doniger, Secretary

	ATEG

		Dear ATEG,

As a new English teacher, I have enjoyed your conversations very much. However, I am a single Mom with four young children and have no time for pornography emails. Please remove my name from ATEG immediately. I do not blame any of you dear people that have helped me - such as Ed, Paul, and others - but I cannot take this any longer. Thank you and all the best. Hope things go better for you.

		SIncerely and appreciatively,

		Teresa Francis
