Nathaniel Grove of the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Sonia Underwood of Clemson University would like to invite you to submit an abstract to give a presentation in the “From scribbles to symbols:  Investigating the development of representational competence” symposium at the 241st ACS Spring Meeting in Anaheim, CA.  The deadline for abstract submission is November 1, 2010.  The following is the symposium’s abstract:

From scribbles to symbols:  Investigating the development of representational competence
The development of representational competence is a primary goal in many chemistry courses; however, much research has documented the difficulties that students face in doing so.  This symposium will focus on research being conducted to investigate how representational competence is developed in students of chemistry and how we can modify instructional practices in order to support students as they develop more meaningful understandings of representational use.
