Subject: [Chem-faculty] Fwd: NSF Funding in Jeopardy--Contact Your Congressperson

DEAR DEPARTMENT HEADS AND CHAIRS,

NSF funding in jeopardy

NSF FUNDING MAY BE CUT FOR FY17

Dear Coalition for the Life Sciences Grassroots Members,

Both the House and the Senate Appropriations Committees have proposed funding the NSF at or below the FY16 enacted levels. The House proposed funding the NSF at $7.4 billion, $57 million below the FY16 level. The Senate proposed $7.5 billion for FY17, the same funding level as FY16.

Both of these measures drastically underfund critical investments in research and development. By not providing an increase for NSF, we will see fewer research grants awarded, which will affect close to 7,500 researchers. This a major setback for the NSF, an agency whose budget has steadily increased over the past five years. Simply put, it is not in our country's best interest to freeze research funding at a time when scientific opportunity is abundant.

We encourage you to contact your elected official and urge him/her to support at least $8 billion for NSF in FY17. Here are several ways you can contact your elected official:

EMAIL:
The CLS has a letter on its site that you can use or personalize. It will be automatically emailed to your lawmaker.

TWEET:
Tweets can also gain the attention of policymakers as they do read tweets that show up in their account. Most Members of Congress have a twitter handle; please search Twitter for your elected official.

HERE ARE SAMPLE TWEETS AND TEMPLATES TO CONSIDER:
[_insert member Twitter handle_] Please support $8b for NSF for the health & economic security of our nation. [Please use the hashtag, #saveresearch]

Example
@SenShelby - Please support $8b for NSF for the health & economic security of our nation. #saveresearch.

CALL ALERT:
It's easy to call elected officials. To find the contact information for your elected official, go to the CLS page and type in your zip code. The page will populate with contact information for your Senators and Representative.

SAMPLE CALL:
Hello, my name is [FIRST] _____ [LAST] _____. I am from [YOUR CITY & STATE] and I am a scientist. I urge Representative or Senator [LAST NAME OF REPRESENTATIVE] to support the nation's investment in medical, educational and scientific research by fighting for an appropriations level of $8 billion for NSF in the fiscal 2017 budget.

Best regards,
Lynn Marquis
