Conference:  Sunday evening, June 22nd - Wednesday noon, June 25th 
Summer Academy:  Wednesday noon, June 25th – Friday noon, June 27th 
Location: University of Maine, Orono, Maine

Sally Goetz Shuler, Executive Director, National Science Resource Center
Ron Berger, Field Director, Northeast Region, Expeditionary Learning Schools Outward Bound

The Center for Science and Mathematics Education Research (Center) is hosting its fourth biennial conference on integrating science and mathematics education research into teaching. The conference will begin on Sunday night, June 22nd, with a
banquet followed by an opening keynote address and continue through noon on Wednesday, June 25th.  Immediately following the conference, a Summer Academy of short courses and workshops will begin, continuing until noon on Friday, June 27th.   
The conference program will consist of two keynotes, contributed and invited talks, workshops, panels and roundtable, poster session, and evening programs, with ample time for discussion and participant interaction. 

The following themes will be the foci of the conference:
1.	Recent findings from science and mathematics education research
2.	Using discipline-based education research in middle, secondary, and post-secondary science 
      and mathematics classrooms
3.	Research supported strategies to increase participation and learning in science and mathematics, particularly among students from under-represented groups 
4.	Strategies for improving student learning using technology in the teaching of science and mathematics
5.	Building effective partnerships to implement research-guided practices in the classroom

·      *Registration waiver for in-service teachers, University of Maine System faculty, students in science, mathematics, engineering, or education programs, postdoctoral research associates, conference invited speakers,  curriculum coordinators
         Stipends of $450 and complimentary on-campus room and board will be provided for the first  75 in-service teachers who register for and participate in the Conference and Summer Academy. 

Lodging:  Rooms at the following hotels have been blocked for the conference.  Participants are responsible for making their own hotel reservations.   Mention the 2008 Center for Science and Mathematics Education Research Summer Conference to
receive the special conference rate.   If you have problems with your reservations please contact us by phone, fax or email. 
To guarantee your hotel room, reservations must be made by May 1st.
