Good afternoon,

As you may be aware, the National Academy of Sciences Board of Science Education has commissioned a study on the "Status, Contributions, and Future Directions of Discipline Based Education Research." CER is one of the disciplines represented on this committee by Melanie Cooper (Clemson), Sean Decatur (Oberlin), and myself.

The question has arisen as to how many PhDs have been awarded in CER in the United States. I would like to try to gather as accurate a number as is possible, hence the subject line of this email.

For the purposes of this census, someone has earned a PhD in CER if they have done so by earning a PhD in chemistry for research in chemistry education, or earned a PhD in some other discipline (e.g., curriculum and instruction) while under the supervision of a faculty member of a chemistry department.

If you are a faculty member who has supervised CER dissertations (I am not counting masters' degrees in this census), would you please respond to me with the names of those individuals who earned a PhD under your direction for CER? If you know the year of the dissertation, that would be welcome.

If you are a person who earned a PhD for CER research, would you please respond with your name and the name of your research advisor? Please indicate the year you graduated.

If you know of colleagues who should be listed, please send their names and research advisor's name on their behalf as well.

I do not presume that everyone in the U.S. CER community is on this list. Please do not assume that your research advisor (or your former students) will reply. I would rather receive duplicate information than no information at all.

In order for me to include your information in this census, I need a reply no later than 4pm on Monday, May 9.

Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Stacey
