GREETING FROM THE CHAIR

As you know we got off to a rather nice start in St. Paul.
With St. Paul as are first chair.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you in St. Louis.
What I need and am seeking are ideas for panels. Here are three
ideas I am currently pursuing, if you have any suggestions for
improvements or alternatives, let me know.

1. "Scholars At Work"

This panel to be co-sponsored with Jerry Jordan will be a place
for persons to come and work with others on ideas. This should
be of interest to graduate students and others trying a new area.
What we plan on doing is inviting several persons to be there to
interact with anyone that has interest in areas. We would
recommend that persons bring drafts, ideas, printouts, stimuli,
etc. The goal is to work in groups or as individuals on common topics
of interest. This is cosponsored with Communication Theory

2. Debate, "Is Organizational Communication Just Interpersonal Communication
             with a Specialized Context."

This is something I have heard about for years, about whether organizational
communication constitutes a separate entity from interpersonal communication
or is it just another form of interpersonal communication. Anyway, I am
still working on participants. The format of this mandates a great deal
of audience participation. Judy Dallinger and Dale Hample have agreed to
serve as judges.

3. Analyzing interactions in movies.

This suggestion is to have several persons analyze the same movie about
relationships and interaction but from differing perspectives. This
would serve to highlight and illustrate the methodological and theoretical
divergences between various approaches.

Anyway, I already have some names for some of the topics and would like
to hear more suggestions about awards, reviewing, panels, or other things
you would like to see next year.

As a prelude, is there anyone interested in self nomination for the offices
that we have in the division:

vice-chair
paper reader (minimum of three)

Let me know what you think
