                   CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS
GROUP COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT (2nd Edition)

Chapter proposals are sought for the second edition of Group
Communication in Context: Studies of Natural Groups (Lawrence
Erlbaum), recipient of the 1995 Gerald R. Miller Book Award and the 1994
Applied Communication Distinguished Book Award. The second edition
will continue to feature original studies of communication in natural
groups, but extends this work by focusing on bona fide groups. The
bona fide group perspective challenges traditional "container" models by
highlighting two characteristics of groups: their permeable and fluid
boundaries and their interdependence with context. The first
characteristic references the continual negotiation of group borders
through group interaction as affected by such issues as multiple (often
overlapping) group memberships, loyalties, and conflicting role identities,
boundary spanning, and fluctuations in group membership. The second
characteristic references the relationship between groups and their
environment(s) as determined by such activities as intergroup
communication and coordinated actions among groups. The bona fide
group perspective thus focuses on how internal group communication
processes are related to (or affected by and affect) the external
linkages of groups.

Studies from any theoretical perspective, methodological approach,
and natural context are welcomed. Chapter proposals (2-5 pages)
should explain the type of group(s) studied, methods employed, possible
results/conclusions, and ways in which the chapter contributes to
understanding bona fide group communication. Send 3 copies
