The newly formed Department of Communication at the University of Haifa
is sponsoring a preconference entitled "The Blurring Boundaries Between
Interpesonal and Mass Communiction," to be held at their university on
July 18-19, 1998. The preconference, co-sponsored by the Interpersonal,
Mass, and Popular Communication Divisions of ICA, is intended to
stimulate dialogue between scholars from different sub-specialties in
communication. Paper proposals or abstracts might explore topics such
as: (a) how interpersonal relationships are portrayed by the mass
media, (b) how mass media content and channels have become an integral
part of interpersonal relationships, and (c) how the blurring boundaries
between interpersonal and mass communication challenge traditional
notions about public and private spheres, and about individuals and
socities. Both empirical and theoretical papers are welcome. Abstracts
should be received by JANUARY 15, 1998 (allow one week for air mail;
email abstracts are encouraged). Please send abstracts to: Jonathan
Cohen, Department of Communication, University of Haifa, Mt. Carmel,
Haifa, Israel, 31905; Fax: 011-972-4-8249-120; Email:
[log in to unmask] Anyone interested in participating in the
preconference, even if not presenting a paper, should notify the
organizers because participation is limited to 50 persons. Bus
transportation will be provided to Jerusalem at the end of the
preconference. Hotel information will be sent to all participants along
with the final preconference program.
