Hi all,

A friend of mine is looking for some part-time help with his new start-up working at Rumpke near the Colerain area of Cincinnati. The description is below. Contact Geoff if you are interested and also feel free to pass this along to undergrads or recently graduated students who might be interested. He is looking to hire very soon.

Thanks,
Lesley knoll

My company is installing a demo plant at a landfill in Cincinnati and I was wondering if you might know of any good grad/undergrad or recent graduates that might be interested in some part-time technician work at the site. We are employing an algae-based approach to treating high-strength wastewater and it has surprisingly worked well for treating the leachate from landfills.

In general, the work would entail going over to the landfill 2-3 times per week for about 2-3 hours each (so total commitment of say 6-10 hrs/week). At the site, we would have them check on the status of the experiment, make sure nothing is overflowing, chemical feed supplies are filled up, see if any of the equipment has failed, etc. Also, we would have them collect some samples from the algae bioreactor and do some preliminary testing (perhaps chlorophyll, settled volumes, etc) and prepare some samples to be shipped up to Michigan (i.e. raw and filtered water samples).

I think that most science or engineering students would do just fine. It may be slightly dirty work (certainly dirtier than lab work) but it could also provide some real practical experience for someone to be responsible for maintaining a commercial demo plant. In general, I think we would be willing to pay $15/hr or more depending on experience, etc.

The demo plant is just coming online the week, so the position could start as early as next week. We expect this demo test to run for at least 3 months but likely closer to 4 months. I will be down at the site on Thursday afternoon (March 3) and again next week on Thursday (March 10) to meet with anyone who is interested.

For students who may be interested, we could also consider allowing them to do some side research related to the project for either extra pay hours or for school research experience/credit, etc.
