Mark Krekeler from George Mason University will be talking on
"Multidisciplinary geologic investigations of environmental problems and
solutions in the eastern Yucatan"

summary: Waste streams generated from tourism in the eastern Yucatan
threaten long-term sustainability of the region. Newly identified geologic
resources in the region are suitable for a wide-range of environmental
applications that address current and future environmental needs. The
hydrogeologic properties, mineralogy, sedimentology, petrology, as well as
economic and policy aspects of these resources will be discussed. An
argument that fundamental scientific studies of geologic resources are the
key to environmental preservation for the region will be made.
