Dr. Jacquie Housel will be teaching a course titled "GIS in the Community" in the Fall.
This course requires NO previous GIS knowledge or experience. It would be a wonderful introduction to the technology and it's applications.

See below for course description:

Geography 460C/560C: GIS in the Community
Instructor: Jacqueline A. Housel, Ph.D., Office: 227 Shideler Hall, Contact: [log in to unmask]
Location/Time: SHD 112 & 213; T/Th 4:10 – 5:25
Overview: This course will provide a point of critical reflection on, and practical guide to, geospatial technologies, with an emphasis on the use of GIS in urban settings. Practically, students will learn how to use Geographical Information Systems (GIS (ArcInfo©) to map demographic and economic data from the 2010 U.S. Census. From a more critical standpoint, students will explore topics key to assessing the risk and potential of geospatial technologies as it is used in urban research and directly applied in urban & regional planning. This more critical examination of GIS related technologies is necessary as the decisions made based on spatial data shape the places that we live, work, and play.
This course will be organized as a seminar course with some class time dedicated to work in the GIS classroom. Readings will cover a range of topics, such as, geographic representation; Public Participation GIS; social implications of geospatial technologies; data access, privacy and geodemographics; ethical considerations of GIS practitioners; geo-political considerations (e.g. legal issues and surveillance); and under-represented populations and equity issues.

Note: No prerequisites are required.
This course will also count toward the elective option of the GISci Certificate
