DIRECTOR OF LEGAL AFFAIRS
Position description:
 
The Director of Legal Affairs provides legal services and supervises a
full-time staff person.  The Director reports to the Office of the
President.  Services involve federal and state compliance, grievance
policies and procedures, contracts and other documents, and drafting and
reviewing policies.  Interprets federal, state, local and Board of Regents
policies and regulations.  The Director reviews legal issues and summarizes
the trends affecting higher education. The Director serves as the
Affirmative Action Officer.  The Director also serves as the Alternative
Dispute Resolution (ADR)  liaison for the institution in the University
Georgia System and chairs the ADR institutional committee.
 
Qualifications:
 
Degree from an accredited law school (J.D. or LL.B.) with strong academic
credentials; at least three years of practice and experience, with
familiarity in litigation and trial procedures.  Must have excellent oral
and written communication skills with the ability to plan and manage
multiple tasks; must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with
diverse constituents in higher education setting.  Must possess strong
analytical, problem-solving, and research skills.  Must be admitted to
practice and in good standing in a state bar association.
 
Preferred experience in higher education setting or government agency
practice.  Preference will be given to candidates who are admitted to the
Georgia State Bar.  Candidates must obtain admission to the Georgia State
Bar within 12 months from appointment.  Desired qualifications include law
review or legal writing experience, experience in or working knowledge of
higher education administration, and knowledgeable in employment law.
 
Salary:                 Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
 
Application date:       Screening of applicants will begin on March 31, 1998, and
will continue until the position is filled.
 
Starting date:          June 1, 1998.
