Thank you Barbara. That was a refreshing sentiment on an unusual cold, rainy day in South Carolina as We head for our Friday night Mexican Restaurant, beer and margaritas. A toast to all of our ALSB colleagues!

To George, Henry, Rich and my wonderful ALSB colleagues: It is sunny here in Dallas and someday the snow will melt in Ann Arbor. (Originally from Kansas City, I miss winter!) Allow me to lend you all some sunshine.

Thanks to every one of you for all that our dialogues do to enrich the content of my courses. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate our ability to share information, celebrate our accomplishments, and poke fun at each other. In the spirit of our camaraderie, I raise my Diet Coke (or whatever) in toast to our academy and each of you: To our many great exchanges. Please keep them coming!

All in good fun,

Barbara

Subject: Question for the day (on a cold, snowy day in Ann Arbor)

Gillian Tett's article in today's Financial Times is entitled "Get a lawyer in the boardroom to boost corporate value." The article cites a Cornell Law School study that notes, among other findings: "Litigation risk declines [when lawyers are on the board]: stock option backdating litigation, for example, was 94 per cent lower at companies with legal directors. Conversely, when there were no lawyers on the board, there was a '308 per cent increase in the effect of accounting malpractice litigation on firm value.'... [G]etting lawyers on board helps diminish external legal risks and improves internal governance."

A strong case can be made that corporations can gain similar improvements in value through hiring business school graduates who have become legally savvy through their business law courses. These graduates should be able to identify legal risks, communicate with attorneys where necessary, and evaluate and implement the attorneys' advice. Any thoughts?
