Murray - All of our junior faculty have at least one paid, non-teaching semester that they can dedicate to research. For senior faculty, after going through a period where 2-0 or 3-0 course loads were discouraged, we seem recently to have become more flexible on no-teaching semesters. nim

Subject: "Research Semesters" (e.g. 3 - 0 teaching load)
Do any of your school's have a formal policy for "research semesters"? I am not asking about sabbaticals.
I am inquiring about a regular teaching load that is reduced for the most accomplished researchers and/or allows the shifting of teaching from one semester to another in order to free up blocks of time to devote entirely to research. I have heard, for example, that some research oriented schools have in recent years switched form teaching loads of two courses (or some equivalent) per semester to a system whereby the most active and accomplished researchers are given the opportunity to teach three courses one semester and no courses the next semester.
Any information would be much appreciated.
