Never assume it is thousands of dollars unless you see the invoice and
cancel check.

Subject: Abstracts

Lynda:

From everything I have read, it seems clear that we should not pay a lot
of
money to print paper abstracts in the annual meeting program. Putting
the
abstracts online, in plenty of time before the meeting, will allow
anyone
who wants a copy to download one and/or print one out. That would shift
the
cost from the ALSB to each school (or user), saving the ALSB money.
Those
desiring abstracts can have them in hand at the meeting. Perhaps the
ALSB
registration desk might provide 3 or 4 hard copies of the abstracts as a
reference at the meeting. The thousands of dollars saved on needless
printing might enable the annual meeting fees to decline, or additional
goodies to be added, or simply give our organization a bit more fiscal
breathing room. Many people have posted their thoughts, so we know you
are
capable of working a computer. This may also be an added incentive to
more
fully plan ahead for the meeting.

I work at one of the poorer universities - both pre- and post-Katrina -
and
I know I can do this if I want to do so. Whether or not you agree with
me,
I encourage every member to think about this and the opportunity to save
or
organization money. I encourage the ALSB Executive Committee to make
the
change to adding the abstracts to the meeting web page and eliminate the
printing of all paper abstracts in the meeting program.
