But somehow they seem to know WE still use it. When I get email from students---which I do---they seem to expect instant responses.

Yes! Email is passé. However, when you tie it to required assignments, their practices change in a hurry.

My faculty and I have been beating our heads against a wall trying to create a culture amongst our students where they check their school email, or email altogether. While they are obsessed with twitter, Facebook, and such they will not check email. I bring this up now, because I have been sending emails to students this week notifying them that they have been awarded scholarships for travel abroad, free money and travel, and they are not responding when there is a tight deadline. These students will receive phone calls and some prodding, but have any of you run in to this behavior? For us it is rampant university wide. As a professional so deeply embedded in email it just seems so bizarre to me, and that is why I could use some advice.
