Linda and all,

I have found a number of shorter video clips on NPR.org that have led to great discussions:

I use the following two to discuss international and environmental law. The first is actually a video slide show and the second a video.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=16658695

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18480769

As to videos that are not free, I have used a few of the Voices of American Law video series - the Kelo case (similar to what Pat Pattison did when she won the Master Teacher competition a few years ago) and the Swedenburg case have been great in class. http://www.distinctiveaspects.org/

In addition, you can find lots of free videos on abcnews.com (and I am guessing the other major networks though most that I use are on ABC).

Finally (I really don't use that many videos!), I have used a great video from pbs.org (which I purchased but now I think it old enough that is is all online at http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/412/index.html. It deals with Phthalates in toys. It makes a great conversation on differences in international laws, the legislative process (with a little research, it is easy to find the California legislation as well as federal legislation that passed not too long ago) - a great discussion on the federalist system we have. It also is great for discussions related to the basis of law and the interaction between law and science or how law must change as society learns and grows.

As always, I would be happy to chat more with anyone about how I use these or incorporate them in to class/exams/etc.

Linda, Google "American Rhetoric, Movie Speechs" for loads of copyright-free issues on ethics and the popular culture. Bill

Many thanks to Marsha for pointing out this new video!

Does any one have suggestions for other good videos for use in a Legal Environment class? I am teaching Chinese students in China this year, and have found that they really enjoy seeing videos (as well in-class activities that permit lots of student participation) -- and the class contact hours here are generous enough that I have plenty of time to engage in these types of activities. Their English language skills are top-notch, so that is not a constraint. Any and all suggestions would be most welcome! Feel free to respond to me individually at [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> if you like, but I'm sure other ALSBmembers would appreciate posting to the listserv as well.

Happy Year of the Tiger to you all!

DOJ Releases Video About Immigration-Related Workplace Discrimination

The Justice Department announced <http://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/2009/December/09-crt-1305.html> today the release of a new video (available here)<http://www.justice.gov/crt/osc/> aimed at educating employers about worker rights and employer responsibilities under the anti-discrimination provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act. The anti-discrimination provision forbids citizenship status and national origin discrimination in the workplace.
The half-hour video, available online and in DVD format, describes the types of discrimination prohibited and how employers can avoid discriminatory practices. The Office of Special Counsel for Immigration Related Unfair Employment Practices (OSC) of the Justice Department?s Civil Rights Division is distributing the DVD. OSC enforces the anti-discrimination provision. It also staffs telephone hotlines to help employers and workers quickly resolve immigration-related workplace problems.

"We want to ensure that workers know their rights and that employers know their responsibilities under our nation?s civil rights laws, which protect documented workers against employment discrimination because of their citizenship status, their accent, their appearance or their national origin," said Thomas E. Perez, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights.

"While OSC vigorously pursues violators of this law, it also conducts an extensive public education program to train employers about fair employment practices and how to avoid discrimination against authorized workers," adds Perez.
