A colleague of mine who teaches management gave me a good article on this
topic.  The author is Randal S. Franz and the article is "Whatever You Do,
DON'T Treat Your Students Like Customers," 22 Journal of Management
Education 63 (Feb 1998).  The author says:

"Society is our customer. The task of education is to equip men and women
to be effective participants in society -- citizens." (page 64).
