My wife is from Haifa, Israel. As she was quick to point out, if this
happened in Israel, the world have would been declaring that Israel not
retaliate and "stop escalating the cycle of violence."

Subject: US Awareness
Mike Katz brought up an interesting point about US people being generally
uninformed - at least about things outside sports in the US. One
continually hears the terms "multicultural" and "globalization" but few
people seem to pay much attention or have anything other than a superficial
understanding of what those terms mean. I have many relevant anecdotes, but
one should be enough.
My wife is from Moscow, Russia. We were discussing how/if things would be
handled differently (in Moscow) if what happened in New York had happened in
Moscow. One thing she said was that after a 15- to 30- minute broadcast
report from the local scene, the broadcast would go to foreign locations
around the world to show foreign perceptions of the events. In all the
hours we have watched news coverage, the ONLY scene from a foreign country
was a "backdrop" shot from German television, with the US achorman's
voiceover about related police activity in Germany. One late-night news
program was anchored from London, but all the reporting (that I saw) was
from and about the US.
