Agreed. Nothing induces passion like parking issues. The other issue at university used to be cutting back on the book collection (I can't even remember the terminology now -- culling and purging?) in U libraries. No longer nearly as relevant to faculty. I once chaired our faculty (Arts) council meeting where the discussion was "A" and "B' requirements. I never did discover what they were but they clearly were right up there with parking. (I suspect they were what lay between some departments and redundancy in the U system!!).

Well, if I were moving to another university, which I am not, one of the first things to negotiate past salary and courses would be parking. No assurance of reasonable parking would be a deal killer. It would be far more important than tenure, at least to me.

I believe that it was former UCLA president Clark Kerr who said that the most pressing responsibilities of a university administration were to provide " football for the alumni, and parking for the faculty.”
