Leslie H. Southwich, Bush nominee to Federal Court of Appeals for
Fifth Circuit (Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas). Opposed by the
Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, Congressional Black Caucus,
NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the Educational Fund, and the
AFL-CIO. President Bush said that he "is a man of character and
intelligence who will apply the law fairly," and that this was a
"victory for America's judicial system." Senator Jon Kyl of
Arizona said that questions about his qualification have been contrived.
Michael B. Mukasey, Bush nominee for Attorney General. Instead of
being held to the oath to uphold and defend the laws of the U.S.,
this nominee evidently thinks that through signing statements and
executive orders the president can take steps not authorized by
the Constitution or by U.S. law. He is quoted as saying that the
president "can act outside the law" on national security
matters. Arlen Spector asked Judge Mukasey asked how the
president can put himself above the law if the rule of law is supreme
It'd be particularly effective if we could pair opposing positions.
