There is also a wonderful history of birth control by Linda Gordon, a feminist historian at U Wis, called Woman's Body/Woman's Right-- old now, but a classic.

Subject: background on Griswold v CT

	>ALSBers,

Regarding my question about the background of the Griswold case, I've

had the following replies, for those interested in the topic:

-- PBS did a wonderful program on this topic not too long ago (actually, a bit

broader on the history of contraception as being part of the first and

second waves of feminism in the U.S.) There is probably great information on

the PBS website. As I recall, there were a number of states with similar

prohibitions -- which went back quite a way. I believe there was a

connection to the eugenics movement and the fear that since white citizen

women were having children at a much lower rate than immigrant women (who

where, gasp, Catholic). Interesting that the test case came in what was

	then a strong Catholic state.

	>

	>-- The best source to deal with the kind of questions you are raising is:

	>Garrow, David "Liberty and Sexuality: The Right to Privacy and the

	>Making of Roe v. Wade" Macmillan (1994) chapters 1,2,3,4. Garrow is

	>heavily end noted (200 plus pages) and contains an extensive
