I'm on a unionized campus in NJ, where we bargain for the big picture with other NJstate colleges; I am local-negotiator. Under our statewide master agreement, we still get across the board steps/raises, but several years ago the state forced us to institute a smaller number of "in-rank range adjustments"--which bump up people's salary. These are supposedly based on merit (approved on my campus through our regular tenure/promotion committee, then reversable by Prez. Under our previous college prez were used to reward her buddies.) The adjustment is forever--and many of us don't really like the whole program. But, at least, it is in addition to regular increases for all.

Subject: pay for performance
I am a member of the collective bargaining team of my faculty union at
St. John's University. I was wondering if any of my colleagues at
unionized institutions were receiving annual salary increases based on a
"pay for performance" or "recognition pay" model rather than uniform
across the board salary increases for all faculty members. I hope this
is an appropriate topic for discussion. If it isn't, please disregard
this message. Thank you.
